There is only one guy more bummed than Jim Furyk that didn't hold on. Nope, not the Five Hour Energy marketing guy; Stefen Lovelace, he had Furyk solo. Instead Furyk went +2 down the stretch and tied with Dufner who was chosen by Brian M, Chip, Matt and Mark Wilson. Each earns $25 and moves up in the standings. Amazingly nobody moved in or out of the top 10, almost unheard of for a major. Most made money but not a lot. Nine straight first time winners in a major, here comes all the "how good will Webb be" stories. Judging by the previous eight major winners, he probably won't win another soon!
It's on to the Travelers Championship where bogeys and doubles at the U.S. Open turn into eagles and birdies at TPC River Highlands. Good luck to my boys, make sure to call some guys by the wrong name at the 15 1/2. That keeps them humble! Best all time was when I thought Billy Andrade was Matt Bettencourt. He was kind of dumbfounded, I guess that's what happens when you haven't won in 15 years on TOUR.

Prime time golf is awesome. It was fun watching at 9:00/10:00 for three/four nights.
ReplyDeleteBR, I think you have pretty high standards as to what you think is exciting in a golf tournament. Do you really think you would have said the tournament was "boring" if Graeme McDowell had made that putt on 18?
ReplyDeleteAs is often the case in the US Open (I think), the leaders fell back to the pack and a few players in the earlier groups made a charge. Shoot, Webb Simpson shot 68-68 on the weekend, including a spectacular stretch Sunday afternoon beginning at number six (birdie-birdie-birdie-par-birdie). Is it his fault that par is a good score at the US Open and he finished with eight straight? You didn't appreciate the drama of his up-and-down effort on 18? Come on man?!
And I don't think "boring" is the right word for Furyk. It's more like "disappointing" or even "choker." The man had played a pretty much perfect tournament (He only had 7 bogeys through 15 on Sunday for crying out loud!!). I know his swing isn't pretty but have you ever seen him hit a worse shot than his duck hook on 16? Again, that's not boring but it was a drastically unpredictable last three holes for one of the most consistent players on Tour.
Take a look at Michael Thompson's scorecard. He had a wonderful round to complement his 66 on Thursday. If that would have been Tiger Woods doing it (they both started Sunday in approximately the same position), I'll bet you would have said his Sunday charge was exciting.
Only two players had more birdies over the tournament than a rising high school senior. Really? Are you kidding me?
I could probably think of more but I need to get back to work!!!
